Day 2

July 24, 2010 was our second day working on the house. I was there, as well as Alok, my mom, and Alex. My dad and Missy also came by to help for a bit.

One thing that we noticed when we returned on Day 1 to show Casey and Missy our place was that the closet wall that was caved in that we saw during inspection, was now very shockingly leaking water all over the floor. Alok's first order of business was to put on a respirator and clean up some of that area.

Alok in his respirator.

After cleaning out the closet, Alok started with the laundry area. Yesterday, we bought a new Bosch front loader washer/dryer to be delivered in 1.5 weeks.

We will likely be taking out the random desk on the right you see to make room. What do you think of the paneling in this room? What would you put on the floor?

My mom decided to start to tackle some of the hunter green painted grass paper in the foyer. Here she is steaming away:

Alok decided to keep tearing up some of the carpets upstairs. BTW, did I mention there is no air upstairs. Hot and smelly!! Here is another bathroom

Now, in this picture, you'll see a pan on the floor and two things in the bathtub. Those were apparently used to control leaks in the tub. Gross!!!

Anyone want to make a cake?

Lovely water stains/probable mold

Alok kept rolling with the carpet pull-ups

The back room with a balcony post-carpet removal.

Of course, you can't have carpet removal without a surprise!

See the darker part of the wood on the left of the picture? That is all water that is leaking in from the balcony. Fun times!

All of the carpets that Alok pulled up on the top floor today

Room off the mold room that has an air conditioner that has a huge opening around it and a tree that keeps trying to poke in.

Close-up of the air conditioner. Alok and my dad removed it and shut the window. What a novel idea.

Here is Missy working on the grass wallpaper by the front door. It was so nice of her to come and help, especially when she's in the middle of a huge project at her own house!

Here is where we were with the downstairs at the end of the day:

The end of day wall paper removal in the foyer. This paper along the stairs is very hard to peel off!

I moved to this green grass paper after getting tired of working with the flowered wallpaper on the stairs.

This is the area immediately to the right of the front door where the mirror is (that we covered by trashbags). My mom and Missy made good progress in this area.

This is the wall in the dining room. There is a gold-ish grass paper on these walls. There is actually a lot of progress made on this wall, although there is something weird that we haven't figured out yet. Some areas look like plaster, some are mudded or something, and there are some areas where it looks like a window was filled in. Very interesting.

There are also a few areas upstairs where my dad started pulling off wallpaper, but we didn't get that on camera.

  1. Laura and Darrin here: for the laundry room, we suggest cheap tile or linoleum, and leave the walls as is for now. Both flooring options are low cost and waterproof. Plus, learning to tile in the laundry room could be good since you'd be hiding your first work in a less trafficked place!

Beautiful old house btw, despite the needed work. Congrats!

  2. my first question is why anyone thought carpet in the bathroom was a good idea in the first place.

additionally, i think for the laundry room, i like the paneling, and the floor if you restain/whatever treatment to it, and then get a rug. i think it'd be nice to have the laundry room mostly wood finish.

  3. Well you definitely have your work cut out for you! I love old houses and I bet it's going to look beautiful when you're all done.

  4. For the laundry room, I would suggest, stone tile or other natural feel tile. Or a darker wood parquet, you can get pieces that fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. I love how much character the place has!

  5. The laundry room already looks like a sauna, so I say get a heater and some lava rocks and just let it happen. Can you imagine doing laundry while enjoying a nice sweat bath? Even folding clothes. They'll dry once they're in the dresser.
