Alok and I have been discussing our master bedroom. The current plan has been to make the former mold room into our bedroom, as seen here:
Potential master bedroom
An older pic with Patrick that shows the rest of the master bedroom
The door into the other room that would be used to build a closet
Potential master bath
We would then finish the attic and just make it into a big rec room (the apartment area will also be a family room).
We have been discussing the possibility of turning the attic into a huge master bedroom/nice master bath instead. We need to decide now, as we need to plan for plumbing.
Potential attic bedroom
Attic (that part in the background that is heavily slanted would have to be walled off because that is where the heat/air for the 2nd floor will go)
So the question is, what would you do?
BTW, we are running a few days late on our 8 month review... that will come soon (we skipped 7 months, largely due to laziness/nothing happening).

Though the fantastic angles of the attic make for an artistic space, I would be concerned that the overall head clearance is limited so it could feel claustrophobic as a bedroom. As a rec room could be a unique space to hang out.
ReplyDeleteThe original master bedroom I think should be the master bedroom, as long as you are comfortable with the mold removal. It looks like there is plenty of space for a large master bath, and a walk in closet. Plus you'll be closer to any future nursery :)
Valid points. The mold is gone in the house :-) (Well, most of it is!)
ReplyDeleteRemember the attic will be very very hot in the
ReplyDeletesummer and very very cold in the winter. If you
decide to have babies it will be a long way from
the babies room. I think you would be happier
in the original master bedroom.

Heat/air in the same space as sleeping quarters isn't advised. I believe it's not code in some parts (due to proximity to carbon monoxide generator) and would be really loud. So I vote original bedroom!
ReplyDeleteThe attic will make a great playroom/rec room and eventually you could turn it into a grown up space of some kind. A friend of mine's parents have an Irish Pub in their attic.
ReplyDeleteIt could also serve as a reading room or library type space with shelves along the straight bits.
