What color would you want to be painted?
Alok has an idea from asking "several people." Those several people happened to be just 2 people whose opinions I actually trust, but several opinions never hurt. I'll wait to tell you what they said (unless they comment here!)
And don't think too long. We need to decide by this weekend. Remember that we are historical, so polka dots and plaid are frowned upon.

ReplyDeleteDo you mean the floor part? Shouldn't the top
be the same colors as the house?
Yes, the plain wood part... so the deck floor/steps. That's what I said.
ReplyDeleteclassic white. acts as a nice contrast and balance to the house.

Is the beige/tan part of the house going to be repainted blue?
ReplyDeleteid think a nice dark stain would be nice, white/light color would be hard to keep clean
ReplyDeleteAll good questions/comments:
ReplyDeleteDarrin- I agree with you and said white.
Alok and his sources, suggest slate gray.
It probably would be helpful to know what colors we are keeping:
1- The bright blue is the majority of the house (it should be wedgewood gray, but is a little more smurf than that)
2- Vandusen blue is the other color. That's a fancy way for saying a royal blue/navy-ish color (you can see it in the pics, it's a dark blue)
3- Some white. The poles will definitely be white, as will any posts around the house
4- Bryant gold. This will mainly just be to accent the sunbursts, not a major color
All tan/hunter green/brown will be gone. Maybe not for a LONG time, but it will be gone ;-)
That massive piece of plain wood that looks like it's blocking a window (2nd floor) is where our stained glass window will go.
We also talked about keeping it stained, but Victorian porches are usually painted. That being said, I am wondering how clean we can keep a light color.
We need to buy the paint by Sunday, so keep suggestions coming!
Be forewarned, painting or using an opaque stain on a large swath of wood like a deck rather than staining it with a semi-transparent stain is committing you to a lifetime of deck maintenance. As the wood expands and contracts, the opaque finish will bubble and peel, because it sits on the surface of the wood rather than integrating itself into the deck. Aesthetically, I think a medium-toned semi-transparent stain would be pleasing, and not fight for attention with the rest of the house.
