Countdown to Baby 2012!!

August 31, 2012

(You should imagine that the title is read like the date/title is on the Daily Show...otherwise, it has no effect).

Last night, I woke up around 2am due to the future tap dancer/drummer/gymnast/Bharata Natyam dancer/ or whatever is causing the constant crazy moving in my belly. Then, of course as any rational person would do, I started to panic about moving before this baby comes.

So, here starts the countdown to baby, who is due 12 weeks from today.

AHHHH!!

Now this doesn't account for actually moving in prior to baby who better not come early. This is our alleged move in date countdown:

So, I decided to head over to the house at about 7:30am and take note of what needs to happen before we move in.  Since I get this question about 10 times a day, I figured I would post for you all to see.

Now, I'm ignoring the whole cleaning aspect in this list because that's obvious.  Any ideas for construction cleaning?

Here we go (not in any order):

1) Get as much done on the outside siding as possible.  Some of this can be done next spring, but we will get as much done prior to moving in.  Today was a perfect example of me using a bathroom in the house while someone climbed up a ladder outside the window. Fun times.

2)

Hang up the spice rack (it goes in the space in the pic below)

 3)
It goes here

4)
Add this trim.... actually this is for all rooms upstairs and in the apartment area downstairs. We got the delivery from Bayview Building Supply today!

5)
Finish the backsplash (notice that the sides aren't attached and put in the stove

 6)
Now, we can always paint/clean this lovely sink later, but right now it's unusable

7)
Hang up the butler's pantry doors after stripping the paint off the hinges

8)
Add some doors on the bathrooms (most of the other rooms won't have doors for a bit)

9)
Clean up and/or tear out this area.... in the apartment

10)
Lay a floor in the apartment area.  There is way too much dust to leave it as a sub-floor for now.  We will just do a pre-finished oak here.

 11)
Get a door for this bathroom

12)
Either fix or at least put up a door so the pets can't escape in this unfinished area under the stairs

13)
Pet proofing... which involves covering all of the open holes, like Alok did here.  He cut tin and put it over the old radiator/electrical holes in the floor

A not covered hole

The lack of pocket doors are a perfect place for dust/pets to hide

Attic stair top needs to be capped so that a pet doesn't get injured jumping on it

14)
Poly all of the exposed brick (this is in 10 places.....side note, look how clean this is! No tools, no paint)

Another one to poly

Another view of the clean space

Same here

15)
Cover up the window wells. They will have the original trim refinished eventually, but for now, there are just exposed dusty weights

 16)
Fix these lovely steps.  Plan= paint them (brown top, white front) and lay a runner.

17)
Hang the stained glass window here. We need to get a piece of glass for it.

18)
Cover this lovely gaping hole in the side of the staircase

19)

We are not finishing the bathroom, but should hang a door in order to keep the dust out/pets out of this area (this is our master bath)

20)
Hang trim in our bedroom.... as well as the other rooms upstairs (at least the bedroom and nursery before we move in)

21)

Repair the hole in the master bedroom chimney

22)
Hang trim in the nursery... otherwise, it's looking good!

23)

Notice how this lovely closet still has plaster? Solution= use the cedar we tore out and line this closet.

24)

We aren't finishing the hallway bath either, but we are hanging a door.

This will stay like this for now... unless he wants to go ahead and lay the hardybacker board since it's pretty dusty

25)
Hang a door on our new furnace room

26)

Make/paint window sills for all windows in order to seal them.

27)

Possibly lay a floor in Alok's office. He thinks we should wait, but again, it's a dust issue.  I think we should just do bamboo.

 28)
Repair the drywall in Alok's office area.  It's too dusty to do it later.

29)
Rip out these old electrical heaters in Alok's office

30)

Nothing much!  Just hanging trim around the laundry room windwo

31)
Hang closet bars in these two small closets. The rest will have to wait.

32)

Repair the chimney hole in the yellow bedroom

33)

Fix this hole....even with a piece of wood so cats can't escape into the wall

34)

Fix the attic stairs..... we are actually just going to carpet this.

35)

Hang the trim around the attic windows.   It's painted and ready to go.

36)
Hang Alok's window.... hopefully the garbage bag works for the rain this weekend!

37)
Cut a door for the attic bath

 38)
Hang this lovely, horror-movie mirror

 39)
Fix the plumbing on the sink

40)

Put a piece of hardy backer board here in the master bath to cover the hole/prevent the dust later

40 things! That's not so bad, right?!  Plus, we need to paint/prep all of the projects (e.g., painting all of the trim before it's hung).

So.... how are you spending your rainy Labor Day weekend.  How about ensuring this mom gets to move in before she goes into Labor and helping out?  Doesn't that sound like fun?  :-)

That's all for now.  Oh, don't forget our polls:

Do you think we will move in by our alleged move in date?

A little more destruction.....

August 22, 2012

First, we'll start with the outside of the house, which is (fortunately) actually being improved, rather than destroyed, at this time.

Here is the east side progress:

Alok has been scrubbing all of the chimneys, which were covered in plaster dust.

Here is what they look like before:

And after:

Foyer chimney
Master bedroom chimney

Check out the dust it leaves behind! YUCK!!

Master closet chimney

Yellow bedroom chimney

Attic chimney

Alok decided to do a bit of cleaning of this chimney, and decided to tear out part of the insert as well.  (He stopped and then decided to call Bruening to see what they think he should do...stay tuned for that exciting update):

My mom has also worked on painting doors/windows, as seen here:

The attic windows are still missing... to be fixed soon:

Alok also worked on the backsplash. Looking good!

That's all for now.  Here's the bigger question, do you think we will make it?
