It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas

November 1, 2010

Or at least our basement is, all strung with Christmas-light looking... well, lights. Here is our siding painting workshop in the basement:

Christmas lights

Siding drying racks (note: this is the area that formerly had "we will kill you all" written on the ceiling

Here is what the siding looked like partially primed a bit later:

Priming the siding. This will be the wedgewood gray color. Right now it's tinted primer.

Exciting, right? Now we just have to wait for it to dry, paint it, put it up, fill in the nail holes, and then we can marvel at our multi-colored house. Here was one of our helpers:

Sorry, had to post this picture of my mom in grandma jeans... literally, they were my grandma's and are super flattering with their elastic waist band and saggy bottom. We were just going to paint (and she was warned)!

In other news, we finally have complete outdoor steps, as seen here:

Last of the outdoor steps

And we have some new window trim, which is just primed right now:

Left side is primed, right side still needs work

Close-up

More close-up...

Even more close up..... OK, I'll stop

Our goal is to get this outside sealed up as much as possible before it gets really cold and then we'll put the outside on hold until the spring.

The apartment closet is slowly being more closed up

In the meantime, we are replacing the world's oldest boiler with a new, more energy efficient gas furnace. The downside is that this furnace will only heat the first floor. So, we're going to hopefully disconnect or do something to the upstairs pipes so they don't freeze. We'll see how that goes.

Our massive, old boiler. Notice that the basement area was dug out before and you can see where the coal used to go into this boiler.

Before I sign off of this exciting report, I wanted to share our very cool, cheap find from a yard sale:

Dresser mirror (BTW, we thought we were just buying the bed, not the dresser, so we were super excited when it all showed up for the agreed upon price)

Dresser....Sorry, the bed was against it. I'll have to get another better picture later

Part of the headboard

More of the headboard

Unfortunately, this is only a full sized bed, so it will be for a guest bedroom. But it's still pretty cool.
