What's the dirt?

October 5, 2010

Today, I pulled up to the house to see this:

We have more dirt! This will be used to continue to build up the area under the front deck to prevent basement flooding, etc. It showed up at the end of the day, so that will wait until tomorrow.

In other front yard news, we have this lovely pile of brush waiting to go to the... well, I don't know where it goes. Somewhere down by the river.

This is actually bigger than it appears

Then, I took a look at our lovely house and saw this:

The west side lower siding had to be stripped due to rotting. Sigh. The good news is that we can then paint our new siding in our new paint colors instead of having to paint this area. Nothing like having a rainbow colored house for awhile.

New jack/pole to prop up this area under the apartment closet that didn't have any support before

As you can see here, more of this apartment closet was ripped out too:

No, that's not a reflection on your left. That's the outdoors.

Although we're in destruction mode here, we have a new window for this closet in anticipation of us actually being able to fix something.

Last night, my mom worked on scraping off wallpaper in this area. See the upper left corner above the door?

Here's the close-up:

Lovely. That hole goes straight upstairs. Also, I think this area was painted rather than wallpapered. I don't know what's going on in here right now.

As for the apartment, our immediate goal is to make it into our bedroom and then when we finish the upstairs master bedroom/bath, we will make it into a family room. Any idea of what to do with this weird fireplace type thing?:

Lovely floor around it

Also, any color suggestions? (OK, we won't exactly be painting for awhile, but it's fun to think about).

Here is the painted/wallpapered ceiling that I mentioned.

I was also checking out our apartment bathroom and look at what the view is to the area above us:

Hmmm... I believe that is the piping for the washing machine. Interesting. I went upstairs to explore more and looked down behind the washing machine and saw this:

OK, you can't really see much, but those spaces go straight down into the apartment. I'm assuming that this area is really water tight and would totally not leak into the apartment downstairs....

Just one more area of destruction today:

New wood/view to the outdoors

Although that area was already ripped up (near the landing), it is more ripped up. You can now see outside and there is new wood that was replaced. Pretty soon I'm going to come inside and everything will be stripped out.

That's all for now! Today is roller derby night, so things are a bit shorter!

  1. I would leave the fireplace in the former apartment. I think it would be a cute addition to the room as a temporary bedroom and as a family room. Even if it's non-functioning - it is character rich! :-)

  2. I also like the fireplace, I recommend keep it. just remove the metal border to the floor. That is weird. A nice roaring fire will be cozy in the winter :)

  3. Hello ladies,

We're planning on leaving the fireplace in the apartment, we're just wondering how we can make it look nicer. Eventually it would be nice to get it working, but we were told that if we tried to use it now, we could burn down the house :-)

Thanks for the comments! All ideas are appreciated!

  4. I would tear out the brick(?) hearth and tile it. Josh tiled our bathroom floor in our old house, so obviously it's not that hard!
