Wrap it up! Countdown to Baby 2012. B-74

September 9, 2012

So, some work has been done on the outside of the house.  It's actually been pretty slow because we were waiting for Menards to get in a shipment of siding/roofing shingles and they took awhile.  All siding then has to be primed and painted. Our resident siding painter (aka my mom) has been out sick for 2 weeks and I'm not using oil-based paint, so this falls on Alok as well.  (Poor guy!)

Here is the progress now, which is mainly around the balcony area:

The workstation that has apparently been set up in the attic.

Alok also is working on stripping/painting the existing trim in our bedroom/nursery.  Here is the lovely white:

I have spent my time on etsy, ordering fabric for curtains (to be made by my aunt).  I am not allowed in the house right now due to toxins/allergens.

Top fabric is for the master bedroom, bottom is for the attic

This fabric is for my office

Bringing a little color to the nursery!

My mom didn't want to just sit around with the plague, so she started to clean out the items that we had previously found, as seen here:

Alok also decided to take out the apartment fireplace plug.  What happens when you remove something that has been holding up soot for probably about 80 years? About 80 years of soot falls out continuously.  This is a picture post cleaning.

The stuff he removed.

Alok also worked on polying the chimneys, which are now done!  (Well at least 99%, so I'm rounding up).

While Alok has made progress on several items that aren't being checked off quite yet, there are several items that are complete! Here they are!

8) ------------------> DONE (this is the area that he tore out)
Clean up and/or tear out this area.... in the apartment

37)---> DONE!  I know I got a picture of this, but I don't know where it is.......

Put a piece of hardy backer board here in the master bath to cover the hole/prevent the dust later

13)---> DONE!  Well, 99%!
Poly all of the exposed brick (this is in 10 places.....side note, look how clean this is! No tools, no paint)

In order to reduce the stress off of my lovely husband, here are some items that we can table for now.  Not having to complete items and reducing the pre-baby list?  Sounds like a good deal:

16)---> LATER
Cover this lovely gaping hole in the side of the staircase

6)--> LATER (hey, we have the shower curtain)
Add some doors on the bathrooms (most of the other rooms won't have doors for a bit)

22) --> Later

Notice how this lovely closet still has plaster? Solution= use the cedar we tore out and line this closet.

--> Later
Nothing much!  Just hanging trim around the laundry room window

----------------

So, here is the continuous list that needs to be completed.  We are down by 10 items to 30 between the work that's been done and deciding to skip a few things!

1) Get as much done on the outside siding as possible

2)

Hang up the spice rack

3)
Add this trim.... actually this is for all rooms upstairs and in the apartment area downstairs. We got the delivery from Bayview Building Supply today!

4)
Now, we can always paint/clean this lovely sink later, but right now it's unusable

5)
Hang up the butler's pantry doors after stripping the paint off the hinges

6)
Lay a floor in the apartment area.  There is way too much dust to leave it as a sub-floor for now.  We will just do a pre-finished oak here.

 7)
Get a door for this bathroom

8)
Either fix or at least put up a door so the pets can't escape in this unfinished area under the stairs

9)
Pet proofing... which involves covering all of the open holes, like Alok did here.  He cut tin and put it over the old radiator/electrical holes in the floor

A not covered hole

The lack of pocket doors are a perfect place for dust/pets to hide

Attic stair top needs to be capped so that a pet doesn't get injured jumping on it

10)
Cover up the window wells. They will have the original trim refinished eventually, but for now, there are just exposed dusty weights

 11)
Fix these lovely steps.  Plan= paint them (brown top, white front) and lay a runner.

12)
Hang the stained glass window here. We need to get a piece of glass for it.

13)

We are not finishing the bathroom, but should hang a door in order to keep the dust out/pets out of this area (this is our master bath)

14)
Hang trim in our bedroom.... as well as the other rooms upstairs (at least the bedroom and nursery before we move in)

15)

Repair the hole in the master bedroom chimney

16)
Hang trim in the nursery... otherwise, it's looking good!

17)

We aren't finishing the hallway bath either, but we are hanging a door.

This will stay like this for now... unless he wants to go ahead and lay the hardybacker board since it's pretty dusty

18)
Hang a door on our new furnace room

19)

Make/paint window sills for all windows in order to seal them.

20)

Possibly lay a floor in Alok's office. He thinks we should wait, but again, it's a dust issue.  I think we should just do bamboo.

 21)
Repair the drywall in Alok's office area.  It's too dusty to do it later.

22)
Rip out these old electrical heaters in Alok's office

23)
Hang closet bars in these two small closets. The rest will have to wait.

24)

Repair the chimney hole in the yellow bedroom

25)

Fix this hole....even with a piece of wood so cats can't escape into the wall

26)

Fix the attic stairs..... we are actually just going to carpet this.

27)
Cut a door for the attic bath

 28)
Hang this lovely, horror-movie mirror

 29)
Fix the plumbing on the sink

30) New basement outside door/windows.

That's all for now!

Jessica
