It's all jacked up

September 15, 2010

Today was a day of more house jacking. Here is the current state of the front of our house:

There's another jack supporting the area here under the front door, notice that you can see the bottom of our green mailbox in the front of this picture (that's important in a sec)

That tan pole that only goes halfway down is the former pole for the front of the house

It was discovered that this hollow, rotted wood pole was holding up the entire front of the house. It then rested on a cinder block and a piece of rotted wood. Hmmm.... I wonder why it was sinking/falling apart:

One notable thing today was that we had mail delivered. Seriously. Here is the mail in the mailbox:

I would think that having to walk under a house supported by two jacks with no porch and a mailbox about 10 feet above the ground would stop the mail, but nope. Impressive/dangerous. We've now boarded off this area so no one tries to use the front door ;-)

Alok and I actually accomplished nothing regarding the house today except ruminating over its current state. I'm heading to Chicago tomorrow and Alok is following soon after for the wedding of Kelly and Kyle, so the blog will be slow for a few days. More to come after the weekend.

  1. Neither rain, nor snow, nor sleet, nor hail...
Nor rotted old porches remov-ed with care,
Nor slam-dunk mailboxes way up in the air,
Will EVER stop the U.S. Mail!
