Day 9

August 1, 2010

Today was more wallpaper peeling. EXCITING! Actually it is. Guess what came down?

The sheep are gone! Woo hoo! Also, we learned that this wallpaper went up in 1996 (there was a date written on the wall behind it). It definitely wasn't original to the house and there were definitely better choices available at that time.

So how did I win the sheep debate? First, not one person who walked through the house thought we should keep it. For those of you who know Alok though, that didn't sway him. What swayed him was the fact that the sheep room is under the master bedroom (aka the mold room). We were afraid that the mold had spread and with all of the new water damage that is constantly popping up, we really need to remove all wall coverings to ensure that the mold isn't just hiding.

Peeling away the sheep:

Here it is before:

And After:

BTW, see that patch on the bottom of the picture? Apparently, there was likely another window unit here that went through the wall. Due to the great patching job there is...... more mold! It's small, but it's there.

Alok also had the fun of scrapping off plaster board. When you look at it below it looks like small children have been trying to claw their way out:

Alok also decided to bust out the windows that he found. Well, not bust them out, but you know what I mean.

Windows from the outside (east side of the house):

Alok's window recovery:

So you may ask, why were these windows covered? Our best guess is that there was a family heirloom buffet that they wanted to display here. Solution- put up plaster board and cover the windows. Now the question is what will we do here? We need to remove the plywood from the back of the glass.... We're also thinking about doing stained glass here (BTW, this is the dining room).

Alex with one ear up, listening to Alok pounding through the wall.

To make ourselves feel better, we also decided that we should do a week end review to let us really see the progress we've made since we obtained the house 9 days ago.

The foyer then:

The foyer now:

(see above for sheep paper room then and now)

The front room with the bookshelf then:

And now:

The dining room then:

And now:

Laundry room then:

And now:

Of course, the then and now pictures should also reflect the fact that the mold has grown, we've had destroyed windows, and the closet is collapsing. But, I think you've all seen enough of that to get the idea.

  3. For color scheme, check out the article about Victorian Shingle style homes at "Old House Web." There is a photo of a house with a slate blue I think Alok would like, with white trim. But I think a cream body with that barn red trim would also be nice.
